Although billed as a thriller, this film turns out to be more about the writing of crime fiction, as practiced by a 50–ish female British writer from the school of P D James or Ruth Rendell. While P D James produced much of her best work at nights after a hard day at the Home Office and after putting the children to bed, Sarah Morton, author of `Inspector Plod Wears a Kilt', needs a villa in Provence for the right ambience to create her latest potboiler. At least that's what her publisher, the manipulative John Bosload (Charles Dance, smooth as silk) thinks. So off she goes to Avignon and Montagne du Luberon for the peace and quiet required, only to have it shattered by the publisher's wayward and very sexually active blonde daughter, Julie. Yet in the end, a book of a rather different character is produced.

François Ozon has come up with an absorbing, if at times slow moving story, which does not end as one might think it will. He makes full use of the Provence out-of season atmosphere, but the overall impression is, well, Sex. Casting Charlotte Rampling as Sarah is of course a good start if you want your movie to be sexy. She always looks if she is about to explode, and quite frequently she does, though her choice of sexual partner here is dictated by necessity. She starts out as Miss Prim, but Charlotte can't stay prim for long, and soon Sarah is dancing with the local waiters and pool attendants. As Julie, Ludivine Sagnier has sexuality to burn, though we soon learn nymphomania is not necessarily a happy condition, even for her lovers. This brings out the mother in Sarah and they achieve an understanding.

Evocative setting, nice photography, absorbing story, good casting in both major and minor roles, plenty of tasteful sex and a surprise ending. Apart from a few slow bits not a lot for us French movie buffs to complain about, really. Heck, it's even mostly in English.
