Having read the book, I must admit that the film gave a better introduction to Nicholas Cage's 'Antonio Corelli' than the book did. In the film, Corelli's first words are 'F*** **f'. In the book, the Greek cabinet ministers state that if the Italians do not know what the Greek word for 'f*** **f' is then he will translate it. The humour came across in the film (in terms of Corelli's introduction) rather than the book. However, when Corelli expresses his distain for Wagner and any soldier that cannot play an instrument, it reads better in the book than it does in the film. For example, Corelli's 'Rules of Engagement' are that 'anyone maintaining that Donizetti is better than Verdi shall be dressed as a woman, mocked openly before the battery and its guns, shall wear a cooking pot upon his head..' This is completely hilarious as far as literature goes, but does not translate well on the screen. Having said this, Corelli is not introduced into the book until page 192 which is the only time you begin to care for a character or the situation that the story is seated in. At least in the film, Corelli was introduced early, and enabled you to connect with the characters straight away. Humour helped both the book and the film to engage the audience with the characters.
John Hurt plays a fantastic Greek doctor by the name of Dr. Iannis, and no one else could have played his daughter more better than Penelope Cruz. When you read the book, you think of Penelope Cruz.
When you read about Dr. Iannis however, you do not think about John Hurt. However, Hurt puts in such a fine performance, demonstrating his versatility as an actor, that you almost forget that he is John Hurt and see the personification of Dr. Iannis. John Hurt is one of the great thespians that Britain has to offer.
Overall, I would regard the story as the Greek experience during the Second World War in Caephallonia, as well as a statement about the fickleness of the Italian army and Mussolini during this period. One never knew which side the Italian army were on, and this story demonstrates the living experience of that.
