Scott (Scott Mechlowicz) has just graduated high school and is ready to spend the summer interning with his father. During a drunken blur, Scott misinterprets an e-mail from his German friend Mieke (Jessica Bohrs), and proceeds to tell her off, not fully understanding how gorgeous she is. Once Scott comes to his senses, he decides to head to Europe with his smarmy buddy Cooper (Jacobs Pitts) to find Mieke, meeting up with twins Jenny (Michelle Trachtenberg) and Jamie (Travis Wester) along the way. Armed with a Frommer's Guide and lousy sense of European direction and culture, the gang heads off into the great unknown, disrupting life everywhere they step.
Though all the marketing trumpets that it's `From the producers of 'Road Trip,' the new comedy `Eurotrip' doesn't quite have the comedic pedigree that the 2000 neo-classic had. Created and directed by the filmmaking team to some extent responsible for `The Cat in the Hat,' `Eurotrip' is an attempt to get one last bawdy teenage good time in before the eventual shuttering of bawdy in today's America.
Pretty much following the standard `I gotta find her!' formula of `Road Trip,' `Eurotrip' isn't much for plot, but rides its entertaining story through some polite ribbing of Europe's hot spots and inhabitants. England has the football hooligans and bottles smashed over the heads, France has the creepy sidewalk entertainment and the impossible lines for its landmarks, Amsterdam has sex and drugs, and Germany has David Hasselhoff and Hitler jokes. There's also a hilarious, film highlight sequence set in scary Eastern Europe which finds the gang living the high life for only $1.87 American, and their guide a `Miami Vice' and `Dukes of Hazzard' fanatic. `Eurotrip' is goofy and loose with its stereotypes, so nothing evolves into mean-spiritedness, and that's why the picture ends up as occasionally uproarious as it is. There's little craftsmanship behind the camera, but the freeform silliness just keeps coming, saving the film from laugh-free asides like a trip to the Vatican and most of the material set in America.
The goofball mentality extends to the cast (which includes a cameo from Matt Damon), who do a nice job selling the jokes, including a great running gag involving a ubiquitous break-up song written about Scott. Though Jacob Pitts's straining hipster doofus role left me yawning, the rest of the actors are able to find laughs when the script doesn't bother to supply them. The real shocker is Michelle Trachtenberg, who uses `Eurotrip' is a kind of sexual coming-out party through various states of undress. The former `Harriet the Spy' is all grown up now, launched into a world of nude beaches and an amusing Absinthe-fueled incest sequence that should give Nickelodeon (as well as myself) nightmares for years to come.
Movies like `Eurotrip' aren't defined by filmmaking skills, but by the laugh quotient, and I was knee-slapping about 70% of the time. That's a good number these days. It might help to have a deep-seated hatred of Europe to get the most out of the film, but the light-hearted clichés should carry over. Grab your passport and have fun. ---- 7/10
